Finding something to eat =(

Postby Kewltist » Mon Dec 20, 2010 6:48 am

Hai thar. I've started playing recently and been amazed overall but I haz problems with finding out how to do some stuff (don't bite me if some of it is explained somewhere, I couldn't find it...)

- fishing (keeps saying I need a fully equipped rod. I have it equipped but have no idea what else do I need/tried attaching baits but it duznt werk)
- killing chickens/rabbits... (I have the offense skill but every time I try to attack something my dudette just chases the poor thing unable to do crap  )
- how can you craft/find string?
Also what happens when you run out of stone/trees? I guess you can plant trees but what about stones? =D
Thanks in advance!

Fishing: You need a fishing pole, string, hook (bone or metal), and a lure/bait (3 items attached to the rod in total)

Stones: Cellars make rocks but it'll be a new map before we chew through all these stones, unless someone goes on a runestone spree of retarded proportions

Also string is a generic term can be any of taproot (found foraging first thing you'll be able to see pretty much looks like a lobster/ginseng hybrid lying on the ground), plant fiber, silk thread (not good choice for a fishing rod tho). Hide strap and stinging nettle also count as string but not for a fishing rod.

EDIT: Yarns can count too as string for fishing line, my bad.

Make sure you have four inventory spaces in the shape of a square before trying to catch a rabbit or chicken. Also, try to stand beside them before clicking on them. Learn some fundamental skills before crafting.

Read Jackard's small tutorial http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3196 and just experiment with the games layout.

IMO get foraging, plant lore and farming, also lumberjacking, carpentry and building. Remember, if there is no claim over it, it is free game. The things you find were probably left for others if you think about it.

Once you know your basics, find some neighbors see if they want to start a farming community. It is one of the best ways too learn advanced noob information, like how a village works, tracking scents, and baking.

Thing is, I don't know how to attack the animal! I could pick it up after a fox killed it but before that i could only chase ._.
Somehow cooking doesn't work for me. It says I need a fire, when i'm literally standing on a lit fireplace. Any solutions to this?

you dont need to attack it. stand next to it, make sure you run (3rd speed) and right click on it. You'll catch it, after witch you can wring its neck

right click on a fire, then click craft => cooking => roasted meat => craft/craft all

Yay, catching chickens work, thanks!
Could anybody shed some light onto fighting boars tho? There is one that won't let me go away and keeps knocking me out, I have no idea how can I fight him. Tried right clicking/leftclicking/looking in Combat menu (have shooting and maneuvers, does it mean I can't fight them without sling?)

Also I need sum Plant Fibre. I've read that I need flax or hemp plant. Thing is, in my 5 hours of playing I didn't find a single one yet! Any ideas? =D

Boars will own u for sure, run for water or just stay down and hope it runs off. Best advice for flax or hemp is look for abandoned claim and harvest, only other way is with luck and wild windsown weeds, you'll need a bit of perception and exploration for those though. Read the guides and wiki is your friend bud.

Don't try fighting boars unless you've invested into a high level of Unarmed or have a decent quality sword and metal armor. It's suicide, trust me.

If you do intend on fighting boars, do so with a sling. Trap the boar with signs from fires, make sure to just put 1 branch in each one.

And you need to learn things like Unarmed Fighting was it? Brawling, Swordsmanship, etc. to learn more combat abilities.

Also, food is all around you, you just need to look in the right places and not die doing it. ;)

You can also just kill boars with 60 unarmed combat, is what i heard. Altough i think you can do it with even lower unarmed combat, because i heard you need around the 40 unarmed combat to kill foxes, but i can do it easily with 28 unarmed combat and some armor.

You must have spent some time developing a few tactics and strategies, so you'll naturally know how to fight one. But a newbie who's just starting out and knows almost nothing about fighting will have a difficult time. Besides, most people who are starting out don't really have much trade access to the good stuff.
