What's needed for taming?

So I know the requirements to do the Quell the Beast, but what else should I have?
Specifically, is there any way to get good enough armor without metal (even though I have good leather my armor always ends up low quality), how high should my unarmed combat level be (if that affects it) , and should I get a high quality rope?
And anything else that I should do?

You don't need any armour or combat skill levels if you do it right. Pen the target, get init with Call the Thunder, use Sidestep on penned target through a corner of the pen (you don't need to put construction signs in the corner tiles), Sting Like a Bee, Quell, repeat the procedure for the next quelling. There are certain times when it's safe to approach the target through the corner for a second, look for when the beast lunges forward and rush in right after that.
