Friends, Protection and Where am I?

Postby Ariander » Wed Dec 29, 2010 3:30 am

Ok, been playing a little over a week now and have managed to set up a small little homestead with a few cabins, farmland, etc - perfectly content to "go it on my own" for awhile til I understood more about the game, etc. I even met a neighbor who seems nice enough and he has moved his cabin and owned land up next to mine - but he hasn't been around much (holidays I'm guessing)- so I suppose we have a little mini-town going.

But then, along game some ppl (3 so far) who all basically said the same thing.

??? "Hi"
Me: Hi
???: Where u from?
Me: US
???: Got metal?
Me: Nope, just a newb learning my way around. :)
???: You die
Me: Why?
???: Cuz
Me: Whyever would you want to kill a newbie? I can't possibly have anything of value you want?
(It was about at this point the third guy started shooting at me)
Me: Please don't kill me, I'm just trying to learn the ropes of the game and it would be really annoying.
???: Okay, I not kill you now.*

*Note: Only one actually engaged me and started attacking, but I suspect all 3 were either the same person or working together because they all asked the bit about where I was from and if I had metal.

Anyway, I decided its probably time to start working on a palisade - however, as some of you may remember from long ago when you were newbies ;D, palisades, while doable, are a lot of resources for a lone newbie and going to take me a bit to build, so I'm hoping to find a village to friend myself to for a little protection and possible trade in the future?

Also, could someone explain how in the world I "FIND" other villages and where I am in relationship to them on the map. I mean even if someone friends me at this point - how do I find them or travel to them?

and finally

Is it possible to keep my little homestead and still be friends with an actual village without having to move? (NOTE: I do not have or am I anywhere near having the ability to create an actual village (lawspeaking and charisma aren't real high on my list of attributes/skills to invest in right now :P)

It's the one area that confuses me the most - how I figure out just where my homestead is on the greater world map and how I find other villages in relationship to where I am....

Thanks in advance for any advice/help. (Sorry so long-winded - figured I'd just ask all my questions in one, long post since they were all sorta related)

Could have been same people or just newbies, whatever, build a palisade it's not hard even for newbies, just chop a lot of trees. Plant trees to replace them!!! Space the trees good. This will make sure that you have more trees later.

Keep in mind palisades are still breakable, but you're just learning the ropes so it's okay.

You're a loner you probably won't find a village looking to give you protection unless you make a lot of linen and trade with them often. The trades can still be fair (not trade linen->protection, but like linen->metal tools), they will protect you because good trading partners making lots of linen, steel or bricks are worth protecting. Anyone who's trading me wagonfuls of linen every week or two, hell yeah I'll go to his aid if he's in trouble.

Just keep building you'll get to lawspeaking soon enough. Charisma you don't have to worry about too much at the moment.

Mqrius seems to be off for holidays, otherwise:

Try and find familiar lakes or rivers on it to see where you are.

Thanks tons for the responses.

I can't make much good linen just yet, but soon...and hell yeah I'd love to trade wagon-fulls of stuff (linen, bricks). I'm more of a "builder" type than a fighter anyway - so trading fits in nicely.

As for the map - thanks, I've seen that link already - but still haven't found one of the major villages listed to sort of place myself in relationship too. And nothing notable yet landmark-wise. Guess I'll keep looking.

But there is no "easy" way to say, be kinned by someone and then they can find you or whatever that I'm missing? I guess I'm wondering how ppl who post, in like Apples & Oranges, for example, are able to meet up to actually do the trading? Am I missing something or do they already know where the person they're trading with is located?

Thanks again, I'll keep plugging away and hopefully not get nuked anytime soon. :)

Mqrius has made a tool that stitches images from gilbertus' client together, so you don't have to view in your browser, and you can send it as one big image. Place it in the "map" folder of gilbertus' client.
Excecutable
Or if you prefer, the source code.
according to Mqrius, It's derived from pacho's mkmap.
use it to stitch mini-maps from gilbertus together - it's much easier to find some sort of notable place of landscape (funny shaped lakes for example) from a larger area map.

@Ariander

After someone stole my first leather made and my only teaseed i carried all the way down to the area to Pyr8 from Ravensholme i met a guy named ??? - he said he's polish. After returning to my basecamp i discovered someone stole my cart with boxes and buckets...

I met ??? then again and he asked if i can make boards for him - i did and made him my Bonesaw as present...

He also asked me to be his kin but i refused...

He's southeast of Pyr8 on the opposite side of the lake

Trust no one until you get them to trust you first. Only trust the guys that won't stab your back, and don't stab the back of guys who trust you.
