Just found a mine. What now?

Postby Shask » Wed Dec 29, 2010 5:20 pm

I just found my first ever mine, ever.

Here's what I've done so far. I was hermitting but bored, so I abandoned my camp. I travelled for about 2 hours to a new supergrid in an extreme corner of the world. Went into 2 caves, prospected, no results (although I only prospected at the entrance to the cave, I may go back and travel deeper in and prospect again). Went onto a mountain, 2 results for tin. Found it, put a log in the sign. Now what? I have no base/home, just a boat and some tools like a metal saw.

Do people normally build their homes around the mine, or build it in the forest?

I've got no experience with crossroads or gates, can I build a teleport from a forest home to the mine?

I guess I should palisade the mine. I don't have the resources for brick walls.

Edit: Btw, I know tin sucks, but I just want it to get stuff like a metal plough, and be semi self-sufficient.

First of all, you cant make a metal plow with tin, you need Bronze (so tin + copper).
Second, prospect again, if theres another mine nearby.

Best you can do is palisade the mine indeed, if its really far up the mountain, consider building a camp near the edge of the mountain, if not, just palisade a bigger part.

If its far away from the edge, you can build CR later, which can teleport you from home to mine, and mine to home. You just need to make a village for that, and make banners to the mine, to make everything village claimed.

Well I advise you finish it, palisade it, and possibly look for more mines before their run out so you can get copper for bronze, or even iron.
If you build a village idol, you can then extend the claim to the place in the forest you want, destroy the inbetween banners, and make a house. You can then build two CR's on both sides, and you can easily warp to each side. Though with the new update with mines, living in the mine might not be a bad idea, with no decay whatsoever, but building a forest outpost so you can bring in logs fast is a good idea.

Hm, well can I still repair a metal plow with only tin?
Why should I prospect again, isn't it pointless having 2 tin mines?

I think he meant to find a different kind of mine, like copper for bronze.

second mine can always be used to sell/rent to other people. And no, its not possible to repair a metal plow with only tin, sorry.

No, you need a "hard metal" which is bronze or any iron-based metal. People often think tin sucks, but really it's not that bad. Just have to find or trade for copper. In fact, I believe we have a barter stand in the Buyan Market that will straight up trade you a bronze bar for any other metal bar... I know that one sells out fast sometimes though.

Cool, thanks for the help. I think I'll be playing this for about 20 hours straight trying to build my new base and get this mine secure :P I usually hunted for food but with the nerf to slings I may be screwed?

I don't understand how trading works in this game, could someone explain it? I mean out here in the edge of the world I don't have the agility to get to anywhere, and surely nobody will have the agility to come out to me?

trading will deffo become a problem for you. So you either have to find a copper mine, and be self-sufficient, or be lucky to find some people nearby who found another mine and are willing to trade.

Well to put it simply you're screwed for getting anywhere till you can get some agility then, but don't underestimate how much agility people have. Eventually you could give a CR sign to your town to someone that will trade with you (and has agility). The other option is to hoof it somewhere for each trade, which would likely be painful where you're at.

An iron mine would be a lot more useful for a hermit, I'd think. So if it was me in the middle of nowhere I'd leave the tin and keep looking. Maybe sell the tin mine location to someone else.
