What determines the time it takes to catch a fish?

Is it random? If so, what window does it fall between?

I timed myself catching 10 fish and averaged the time out to be around 40 seconds, but I had several extremities.

So, is there anything to it or is it just random?

It's random, much like real fishing, though far far faster.

I for one would like to continue fishing as long as I have open inventory.

I, on the other hand, would like to see some kind of minigame for catching fish,
but I haven't been able to think of a good one yet. :(

Maybe you could cast out, and when your rod shakes, you click something to pull it in, this way you can catch fish faster if you pay attention, and it gives you something to do other than click and wait.
