Palisades and Cliffs

The settlement I'm currently in is in a valley of sorts - a long stretch of cliffs to the north and south mean that only by walking east and west can you reach it. I'm in the process of getting the stuff together for a palisade, but I've never built one around cliff-ends and shit like that before. Are there any problems it causes, and ways to solve them? I say this since I've had trouble placing them on the edge of cliffs.

yeah there's some trick to placing the palisade so that it goes up to the edge, someone else can probably explain it better than i could
