Deforestation

Postby TheDiablo » Tue Aug 11, 2009 8:11 am

People say that replanting the trees you chop down is easy, and that everyone should do it. But ingame I've seen no one go through the (quite long) effort of replanting, and I havent heard of anyone else doing it except the elite tree worshipping elf-like villages deep in the forests. What I'm really trying to say is, we need the map to replant a few trees or else were all screwed.

It isn't as hard as everyone thinks. We have a nice little forest going in Stillmeadow. 20-ish trees of varying sizes. It's even less of a problem because I'd say that in two or three weeks (at the most?), the map will be reset. If anything, I think we should try and get the whole world deforested before Ragnarok.

I agree that this might be a problem atm, but the new maps are most likely going to change the dynamic of these things quite a bit. My problem with automatic regrowth is that I want lumber to be a resource that has to be managed long term.

A character who is neutral on the nature/industry slider should easily be able to produce an average of two firs per day given a morning and evening log-on. That's either 56 blocks, or 8 blocks and 16 or 24 boards per day. It's hard to believe that many players would need more than that once their initial cabin, mine, and palisade are set up. Join a community and you won't even need to build all that, plus someone could specialize in the task so you don't have to grow your own wood.

I wonder how many of these people complaining about a lack of trees are either in an overly population dense area, an area not optimal for tree production, in a community with nobody specializing in tree planting, or unable to log in during their tree planting window (I'll assume most players are neither lazy nor ignorant in regards to the "art" of tree planting).

and thats the point!

its so perfekt idea to let the players manage the treeamount.
later in game wood will have so high value and this will give the game such a dynamic change for politics and stuff like that. i love this idea. please dont let grow trees allone.

My idea for it would to have it be necessary to have at least a few people maintaining a forest.
If there are too little trees the forest tiles start to recede, making the forest harder to regrow.
and if there are too many trees, the forest expands, maybe even putting some of the settlements that are near it in danger.

if every tree is chopped, every player will start to plant trees. maybe in such a large amount that wood become again 0.0 value.

Actually, if every tree was chopped down no one would be able to plant trees, because the seeds come from the trees.

Forest growth will probably makes it's way into the game eventually, maybe even next map. However, the rate at which trees are planted and grow will never be able to outstrip the rate at which they're cut down.

Replanting trees is mainly a pain because they have a chance to die on the table even if you do everything right. Removing that feature would make it a lot easier to replant because people, even high industry people, could plant without having to watch their saplings like a hawk.

It would also be nice if they made a hat that gave a nature bonus like the Cylinder Hat that gives an industry bonus.

you need automatic regrowth for the newbies.
there are no trees outside a claim in a giant radius around RoB -> how are they supposed to survive?
also a low regrowth rate wouldnt hurt jorbs initial idea.
