my trees dont grow

ive been planting a lot of trees. some grow right, some dont. i made sure theres a 25 sqm area around them wiht nothing in it, i actually though at first its 5 tiles in every direction. but some trees grow right, some dont, even if they are planted at the same time and both have a lot of space. i must be doing something wrong. does it "hurt" a tree to take stuff from it before the final stage?

Trees can get stunted when any object with a bounding box is around them. That might have been you taking stuff from them, that might have been some animal if you don't have the trees on enclosed, claimed land.

Hm, if you simply ploughed a piece of land and planted a pine tree in a small clearing in the forest, would it be more likely to fail than grow? And when you say stunted, is that permanent (i.e. it's permanently immature)?

different trees grow with different speed, even if they are the same type, and different types even grow different on different lands

Are they stopping when they're almost done? The last stage is random and sometimes it takes forever.

I think someone once said the tree needs a decay hit to complete the last stage, which makes sense to me. So you can get lucky and your tree will grow the last stage quickly or you might wait 5 days due to decay hits being random.

yeah decay hits are a bitch, i've had some trees before take over a week to get that last stage
