Do fertilised chicken eggs need to stay with their mother?

Postby Shask » Sat Jan 08, 2011 11:27 pm

Had a cock and 7 chickens in the coop.
The next day I had about 4 fertile eggs, I got rid of 4 the mothers, the ones that had lain fertile eggs.
I've just checked and they are no longer fertile, just normal eggs.

Did I underestimate the maternal bond of our poultry friends?

I'm a moron. Might consolidate the information about chicken breeding as I thought it was all on the extensive "Chicken Coop" page! Thanks loads.

btw, if a chicken has 2 eggs, you can place at least 2 more under it, as long as there is an unbroken line between chicken and egg. havnt tried how far down it can go

I found previously that as long as the eggs are in the same coop as the females, they will hatch. They don't need to be directly under. You need the mothers, they have to keep the eggs incubated.
