How does it work? Some jerk came up to me and killed me today and I only got a FRACTION of my stats. How does this work?

That's pretty much how it works. You get a fraction of your stats back after you die as well as an LP refund depending on your Tradition/Change belief. At full tradition you get 75% of your stats back; at full change you only get 25 or so percent.
