Turning the map off..possible?

Just curious if it is or not.

It causes some extra lag that I would rather prefer not to have and I am not much of one to map out areas. I have a pretty good memory. Thus, the map is kind of pointless to me.

Do any of the special clients support this kind of ability? Or. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do?

you cant actually turn it off.... but you can minimize the interface by pressing the down arrow button on the interface itself or just use spacebar, it will lower the interface and lowering your hardware lag by just around 1-5% max i guess... then you can use quick keys (the hotkeys or just use the letter combinations) to do what you need - lowering the interface also gives you wider sight range so to speak so it will also be easier to look for plants to forage

Well, that's disappointing if it's true. Not exactly looking for that. It's the map that's the problem. After it pre-loads after visiting certain areas when re-opening client my lag is literally like. Nothing.

Because every time i play the game(open the client and log in.) it has to re-load map areas I have already been to. Once I visit them in that log in session though it stays stored. I would either want it to stay stored permanently so I don't have to constantly re-get them, or to simply have the ability to turn the map off.

For those with super fast and stable connections it's probably quite impossible to notice. Which is kind of why I mentioned it here rather then making a critique thread in relation to it as I don't think it would benefit very many people on H&H other then a small %. I could be wrong, though. I really don't know. Maybe if the map somehow stored the map content instead of having to re-load the content each time someone re-opened their client there could feasibly be less server strain and over-all happier members as the lag then should be less and the server would be able to handle more people?

well the reason why it "re-gets" maps is that they need updating depending if the cenery has changed or not..... for example if there werent for map updates you would never see missing trees, buildings and such..... therefore its nessecery to update them every so often
though im thinking map update packs can be disabled by some script if you know the code and know what to do... a simple packet reject or stop it from sending map update requests could pretty much solve that part of the problem.... but the network bandwidth gain should be minimal since the map updates only when you visit an edge of a square and the square itself is about what....100x100 pixels? that amounts to a mabey 10-20kb of data?

Well yeah, that's why I kind of figured and my primary suggestion was to just simply be able to turn it off. Yeah, hopefully someone can have a way of doing it for me. Not sure, though. I have some ideas but if someone knows a way that would be nice.

It's not a major lag, really. It's just a tiny delay and it probably only effects a very small % of users on H&H. But. Tiny delays can add up to make traveling a lot more chaotic especially if you're traveling through a lot of maps at a fast rate(boat.)

Being on an utterly shitty connection, I know it does. When I first log in I have a tan-colored 'map's loading' section, and I lag until the minimap fully loads. Months ago, I used to be able to 'break' it if I traveled along a river while lagging, which would cause it to just give up, so to speak, and I would be lag-free with a tan colored square with a red X moving around it instead of a minimap.

That said, I'm sure the benefits of a 'map toggle' would be minimal for the average user. I've learned to deal with it (can't ask people to develop to the lowest common denominator, after all).

Make a custom client for it.

If they do this to the regular client all other clients have to update, so screw you.

I don't like you :x

ALSO ALSO, no, no custom clients do it, make your own though. :V

Yeah, that's why it's in the "how do I" rather then in the critique board. Don't think it's worthwhile enough to actually bother the devs with adding some feature to support this issue.

Basically. If the user is on Dial-up, Wireless of some sort, or even highly unstable broadband providers(would have to be VERY unstable..XD) they could incur this issue. However, the % is so miniscule.

So, I suppose noone really has any suggestions, then?

Yeah, trolls usually don't. Why? Because I don't conform to their BS.

Anyways. I just might have to if no-one has any suggestions that will keep it off for at least most of the time.

Just because you have to re-load it doesn't mean its the cause of any lag you are experiencing.
