If you have your friends hearth secret you can have a new character spawn near their hearth fire.

If you want to get to your friend with your current character you are going to have to party up and start following that arrow.

Alternatively you can teleport to another village freely if you have no hearth fire. However destroying one's can be a tedious act without enough strength (around 20).
