Mines themselves seem to have higher STR requirements than cave mining, I've heard 200str thrown around.

It always depends on the kind of rock you have around you. I can mine in my mine with 60 STR just fine.

Good to know Digdog. If you don't mind my asking though what kind of ore is your mine and at what level is it?
At the moment there seems to be complaints about people placing mine holes themselves and being unable to mine inside, I've been working on the assumption that a mine hole within a cave may require more strength.

I've not been into a cave mine hole yet, but with even 90 STR and a Q30 pick I've only hit one patch of rock I couldn't break period.

The minehole is on the surface, forest terrain. I mined Q10 iron (vein ran dry lately though, sadface) with a Q16 pickaxe. There were some parts where it mined that fast that I barely could keep up with my eyes on the LP counter, but there also was a different part where it took twice or thrice as long for one mining step. Still, everything minable at 60-80 STR (started at 60, raised to 80 throughout the process).

DO NOT build mine holes on the surface, that is a huge waste of resources, go look for nodes inside caves.

I do know that now, didn't know it back then when we built it. Oh well.

In a related note, how many mine layers are there? I already know there's one below the cave layer, is there another one below? And even more below that one?

MIning iron ore q10 in a mine hole with 60str, while started with 52, pretty easily. How hard it is to mine a specific section depends on other parameters than ore the section hold, if it's holding any ore at all, it seems. Strangely enough it doesn't seem to correspond with the rocks q you get from that section as well.

More examples - i've tried to mine a cave section on 50 str, and it said it's "slightly too hard" for me to mine, after hitting 60 i've tried again and after wasting full stamina bar on one hourglass got some tin ore, while other cave i know has tin ore vein which can be easily mined at 30 str. Both give ore q10. So as far as i can say it's completely unrelated to the actual ore type.
