How do I fish?

I have fishing and a fishing pole. I applied a root (for fishing line), hook, and bloated leech to my pole. I click adventure then fish and cast line into the water...but I've done this about 50ish times and havn't caught a single fish. Is this normal, if not, what am I doing wrong? Generally the cast lasts like 5-10 seconds.

search for a fishing spot, that is a spot where fishes jump out of the water
only there you have success with fishing

That last part is what's wrong.

Cast your line, and then leave it. Your character will occasionally find fish if you don't cancel the action (by moving around). Think minutes, not seconds. 10 minutes is a nice short fishing trip, methinks. You should have a few by then.

Well I never cancel the cast, I let it go until he brings the line back in (which lasts 5-10 seconds as stated). So I have to find a spot where fish are jumping out of the water then?

One fish long, to be exact. If you use bait, you catch something with every fishing step, but you lose your bait after every fish you catch. With a lure you don't get a fish each step (you still get the LP though) but your lure doesn't vanish when you catch something. But when you use lures there's a chance that your lure/hook/line breaks after each fishing step.
