Hunting

After my friend almost got killed by trying to trap a fox with signs, we decided to trap it in a round pole fence. We managed to surround it completely, and used a runestone to block the hole we left to get in/out. Two questions:
1. Does this work or have we just been lucky it hasn't broken out?
2. Will it stay there if we don't kill it, or will it disappear eventually?

2) will stay. only if you leave the area it could despawn
