Boat Hunting Shenanigans

I read somewhere that you can shoot a boar from a boat. Then once they are damaged enough to run away, you can punch them to death.

So my stats are PER 12, MM 20. I have a q16 sling. I decide maybe this is good enough for boat hunting.

I found a boar, and waited patiently for my aiming meter to fill up. After a couple successful hits, the boar starts running away. I give chase!

I punch that mofo in the back for a lot of damage!

Then suddenly I see a green number float above his head that says "100".

Now he is healed, WTF? He turns around and starts chasing ME. I barely made it back to my boat alive.

I tried fighting the same boar again, with exactly the same results. He runs away, I punch him, then he heals for 100 and chases me.

Somebody please explain?
