Help im a mining noob!

Ive found a cave that has been letting me use the mining skill on one wall its creating a different color patch of ground, I assume if I keep making those new plots itll cause a cave in, exactly how far in can i go withou causing one? Is there a guide for all this, I dont want to die prematurely here to a rock.

As far as I am aware and was told, it's best to only go ONE tile into any part of a mine. Although people on forums claim that even one tile in can still potentially cause a cave-in, so..be careful?
