How do I attack with melee?

How do I attack a fox using just a normal weapon (provided I read it right and a stone hatchet/axe is a weapon)?

When I go to combat, I only have the Shoot option and the Dodge maneuver..
I'm very new and I love the game! Hope I get an answer soon!

you're going to need to learn a lot of skills... read up about skills a bit on the wiki and read the combat guide that's stickied in this forum

And Sabatini, I've been reading them. I don't really understand them. I read nearly the entire combat guide and it didn't tell me how to attack. Yeah, once I right clicked and raided an ant pile and almost died, but I wasn't even able to attack them during the fight.

Do I need some special weapon or skill to attack?

You couldn't attack because you didn't have enough initiative points for an attack, I'm guessing. Try unarmed first, it doesn't need IP so it's a bit simpler to get started with. 10 points in UA should be plenty to get you started with ants, if you attack them one by one instead of raiding the hill and aggroing all three. Tab over to the combat guide as you try stuff out if you can't figure what something does, and if you do start losing just walk away, you're faster than the ants.

you couldn't attack because you don't have the skills... unarmed combat, militia training, etc. you need to get a bunch of skills to get the various combat moves.

Ah, I understand now. It's pretty confusing for a newbie.

And how can I get shoes? I stepped on a thorn and it basically destroyed my shoes, and now I'm losing a ton of hunger and dying. Any quick way to get them back?

You can craft clogs out of two blocks if you got carpentry. Maybe even just lumberjacking, I'm not sure.

or, you could have looked at your old clothing when you logged in more closely, or at available equipment on the wiki.... i got by without any questions like this. Especially since tere are so many topics on which combat style is best, how to kill, etc.... try using the search function on the forum (and take a minute to read how to use it)
