Each beehive will pollinate one wheat tile per however many ticks.
One wheat tile will not be polinated by multiple hives.
If you have two hives next to each other and next to a lot of wheat tiles, then they'll cover more tiles quicker but will not cause any individual tile to grow faster.
To put it another way,
If you have 1 wheat tile and 0 hives your grow speed is SLOW
if you have 1 wheat tile and 1 , your grow speed is FAST
if you have 1 wheat tile and 2 hives, your grow speed will still be FAST, same as 1 and 1
if you have 2 wheat tiles and 1 , your grow speed will be ever so slightly slower than 2 wheat tiles and 2 hives.
(See diagram below)
I see most people doing A or B, using two beehives one at each end of a space between two crop lines, or one at the middle of the space between two crop lines. According to the wiki, wouldn't those beehives only weakly effect 2 wheat tiles each (out of a dozen or more)? To get your whole field effected wouldn't you need to put one beehive in each space between crop lines like in C (to weakly effect all wheat tiles), or one beehive for each wheat tile like in D?
