How many times do I have to mine a spot?

Whenever I go to mine a spot, the hourglass comes up, and it finishes rather quickly.

But then, another hourglass appears.

And another.

And another.

And another.

How many times do I have to mine the same spot in the wall before I break through? And is it true what I heard about how if you're going to find ore it's going to be the first hourglass?

No, it's not true. How fast you mine and how many hourglasses you have to come through depend on your strength and the quality of your tool.

Well, obviously I know there's a chance I'll find nothing, but if mining a spot that gives stones as I chip at it means nothing's there, I guess I'd better go find another spot.
