Can you not build in caves?

Postby Vendayn » Sun Feb 06, 2011 4:29 am

I swore I saw something about in world 4 you could build in caves. Even remember seeing a screenshot of a small log cabin in a cave...I found a cave for my tribe, but I can't pave the ground, I can't put torchposts up and I can't build a single thing except campfires. Are caves just for mining? I was hoping for a dwarf fortress style home, but doesn't look like I can do that. Or do I need skills or how do I get started in cave building? Or is what I hoped to be able to do, not possible?

Thanks :)

(edit)

If it matters, it was a hole onside of a cliff/hill...and there are tunnels going through it. Some of the rock is too hard to mine though (not sure if mining is even possible here, since the rock I find is too hard), so not sure if there is anything in this cave. Goes a long ways in though.

Hmm, can't even build spruce beds in caves and they are really small...bah :(

(edit)

Can't build mineholes either...and I was reading someone mined an area out underground in a cave, and was then able to build on it. But how do you dig down? When I click to mine, all I can mine are the walls, but they are too hard

LOL...should have done more testing.

If you lay stone in caves, you don't need to pave it at all. Then you lay the stone, and you can build on top of that stone.

Do I need more strength to mine the walls? Or is that impossible to mine when it says too hard?

If your strength is high enough and/or your axe/pick is high enough quality, you can mine the walls. If it's too hard, that means that you need a better weapon or need to increase your strength.

Thanks :) And by paving, I meant needing to plow before hand...I kind of considered that paving. But that isn't really right I guess.

Quality is low, plus low strength...there is one section of the cave that is very weak, but I need to get a bit stronger I guess. The cave goes quite far back, but no extra openings or anything. Lucky find.

You may find other walls in the cave that you are able to mine at your strength, from my experience the strength needed varies wildly.

Don't forget that others can dig into your area just as easily as you can dig out. Not having any other entrances just makes it harder for someone to come and go unseen.
