Clay??????

I do not understand how to get clay. I have read the wiki and I am even more lost. I have dug in shallow water and mudflats and have yielded 2 units of clay. Can someone please explain this process to me?

Not every shallow water has clay, you'll have to find a better spot to dig.

I have wondered for hours hitting shallow water and every mudflat I have seen and I only got 2 out of it. What am I doing wrong?

I'm still a nub but I tent to shoot for spots that have a mossy cover to it or some sort of graphic in the shallow water. I find more full nodes that way then just randomly digging. Also, dig in the sandy/desert areas as well.

Yeah, if you can't find any clay in shallow waters try digging in that 'red deserts' / mudflats / barren. But there's no real catch to it, just luck to hit the right spot.

You need to fine a node. Even in a mudflat there isn't clay everywhere. It's confined to certain spots. When you find a mudflat dig in one spot. If you only get 1 clay and no more then you need to move away a little bit and try again. Keep digging in different spots until you find an area that provides clay every time you dig. Once you find that area(it's called a node) dig around to find the highest quality spot on the node.

Nodes are at least as large as your screen and usually larger so move a good distance between dig tests to search efficiently. Also you can dig while in a boat so just cruise down the river digging every once and a while and you will find clay easily.
