Which client to use?

Completely new player here; just downloaded last night and didn't have time to do anything other than not figure out how to move stuff into my inventory before I went to bed.
Browsing the forums as much as possible today so I can have a bit of an idea of what's going on when I log in tonight.
I've heard about various alternate clients that people use, some with features like screen re-sizing, x-ray and turning off night mode. I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on which to use and where to get them? To be honest, the only feature I'd really be after is the ability to make the playable screen a lot bigger, as I play using my TV as a monitor.
I haven't been able to determine much other than that these clients might not be officially supported, so I'm curious if their use is frowned on at all (or even flat-out bannable)?

Having an issue with that client, I can't get it going at all.
When I go to edit the run.bat folder, it's mentioned that I need to add the game directory on my computer. The thing is, I don't have one, I just click the big "play" button at the top of the website and it launches.
Searching for "haven" or "hearth" brings up nothing anywhere on my computer either. How can I find the game directory, or if it's not there, how can I download the client to my computer? (The link in the PAQ section does nothing)

I created a directory for the game, but when I try to run the client, I get only "windows cannot find '-Djava.library.path=E:\Games\HH'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again."
If someone would be kind enough to explain step by step how to get this client going, that would be amazing, as I have no idea what I'm doing, apparently.

I've done this now, downloaded ender's client and unzipped it into the folder I created ("E:\Games\HH). The run.bat is :
start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Djava.library.path="E:\Games\HH" -Xms256m -Xmx512m -jar haven.jar moltke.seatribe.se -r ./res

Ugh, I tried to play with the default client, but I just can't do it... it's so small I get a migraine right away and full-screen mode just goes to a blank white screen until I end the process.
Any other advice on what might make this ender's client work? For the record, I am on a 64bit machine, so that's the version of the client I downloaded.

I've done this now, so the bat is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Djava.library.path="E:\Games\HH" -Xms256m -Xmx512m -jar haven.jar moltke.seatribe.se -r ./res

But still nothing, I get a small black window popping up for half a second, and then nothing happens.
Any other ideas? (And again, thanks very much for everyone taking the time to try and help!)
