Killing stuff?? help!

ive been tryin to kill a cow/moose thingy and , for some reason all i can do is punch...and it somehow...wont die...is there a way of seeing its HP or something? and umm how do i close the combat thingy? so that i can see the day/night thingy again? and yeah im totaly new..is there some kind of tutorial showing how combat works'?

your unarmed skill is not high enough to actually hit them
