Fishing problems

I can't seem to get the fishing skill to work. I have a fully equipped pole (pole, line, hook, bait). I even unequipped the pole to check. When I click on the fishing action under adventure and get the hook icon, I can't do anything with it. Left-clicking the hook icon on the water causes me to walk out into the water, and right-clicking the hook on the water simply causes the hook icon to disappear. I never see my line cast, and I certainly never catch any fish (or lose my bait for that matter). I only fish in spots where I see fish jumping, and I fish from shore.

Am I doing something wrong? Help!

try clicking close to you in the shallows or get on a boat and do it from there. if you're clicking the middle of the river, your character will try to walk there, because you only fish the square directly in front of you.
