Join a village, neighbours will only cause trouble.

How do I join a village?
I can't find anyone alive...:-(

How do I find out where I am? Is there a map or something?

Yes, yes there is a map.

The best way to find people is to leave valuables out in the open on claimed territory. After the valuables are inevitably stolen, just collect the scents left and follow them to meet your new friend!
That or wander around or use the Dwarves and Thieves subforum to join a village.

Find a lake, or mountain.
memorise the way that particular lake or mountain looks. every little bit of it to be 100% sure.
then slowly scour the world map like its a crossword, purposefully moving along smoothly, going up just enough and doing it back, and so on, until you find your lake, mountain or whatever.
