hi, im a newer player and fishing is confusing the hell out of me. How does it determine the type of fish you are getting? I looked at the table on the wiki but the same combo of location and lure/baits show up for 6 each types of fish each, some of which I never see. Specifically, I'd like to start catching the eels but I have no idea how. Please help!

It also depends on moon phase. Anyway, it's full moon currently, so eel should be biting on earthworm in deep water, on average ~q10 gear.

Were the earthworms q10 as well?

Do q10 earthworms even exist anymore? Lowest q soil I've ever found is like 14.

i think only if you dig down a q15 spot to q10 (i think your q14 was already digged a bit)

oh, no. im never going to find q10 earthworms, lol.

I've seen a couple of natural q10 spots, but they're damn rare.

at least there must be another factor and maybe it is location or area, but i have no idea else what is affecting.
on last world, my charactor A fished eels from deep water on full moon days and she also fished plaice on full moon nights iirc. but my charactor B who lived 6-7 SGs away could only fish eels from shallow lake and only at night on full moons, and plaice were never seen on full moons but found loads on crecent nights. on this world, ive done some fishing and having different combos, but closer to my char A on last world, but my records arent enough to decide what is best to fish which kinds yet. (but so far, fat moon, daytime, woodfish, deep river seems to give me eels.)

so, i think it may be better that you try various combinations yourself, check your own results and decide what is best for you. wiki is the best reference to see combinations of gear/bait/location/moon/time, but may not give you the same kind of fish as it says. at least, that is what i have been experiencing and have been wondering why.

the info you give are always correct and accurate and i trust your posts always, but as for this one on fishing eels, im not really sure about this q10 thing... it didnt work for my char B on last world when i had no problem getting q10 earthworms
