Are mine supports ONLY needed to mine under?

I know we must mine under mine support range in order to avoid cave ins. but afterward when the space becomes open and spread further. are the previous supports with complete open tiles needed?
like could a person make a camp and cupboard storage out of the area, and damage away the older supports for more space? is the action of destroying a support going to cause a cave-in?

one could say just build around them, but they are quite a few and no more then 6 tiles appart. kind of annoying.
