Tree planting quick question

Postby MikeySix » Tue Feb 15, 2011 12:07 pm

Do trees need more than 1 square to grow? or can i pave around a sapling i planted, and the squares immediately around the square I planted the tree?

yes, they need space, but you can pave around

what matters is the hitbox, e.g. dont place things that stop you running (like boat, basket,......)
maybe someone with better english explain this a little better

You may plow, pave, or whatever you'd like to your hearts content as long as you don't plow or pave the tile that the sapling itself is on. Grog explained it well enough -- the only things that stunt growth are objects with hitboxes. If you can punch it or lift it, it has a hitbox and is therefore stunting the growth of your tree. This includes frogs, rats, other trees, and nearly everything else.

Trees need 39 vectors in every direction to not be stunted, which translates to 3 tiles if you plant it PERFECTLY in the center of its tile. It's usually a good idea to give it 4 or 5 tiles so you have leeway for mistakes, because vectors are fucking tiny.

most treeplanter make a tile in every direction (N,S,E,W) next to the sapling space, leave a tile out and make another "cross"

hmm... well if i ended up killing my trees, i can just replant some grass and start over if they never end up growing. which is going to take awhile since i'm growing on heath.

grass is a "non useful" as heath

just let them grow, they will make some parts of the heath to forest terrain

best way is to grow them on their natural terrain (either leaf- or pine forest ground)

I know, I mean if i paved too much or something. I just have a bad feeling paving the tile directly next to it is bad :?

ah, i see
anyway, paving right next to it isnt bad, rather helpful to plant them with the right distance to each other (and not too close)

Yeah i used the grid toggle on ender's client to plant them perfectly in the center of the tile.
