New to the game..

Postby nielsintl » Thu Feb 17, 2011 11:41 pm

So I just started playing this a couple of days ago as I have been stuck at home (sick)... Must say that it is very addictive thus far.

I've been doing fairly good progressing my guy but progress is certainly slow. Mainly I have been cutting trees, fishing, and building small camps for myself as I explore the world. I've died once to a bunch of ants when I raided an ant hill thinking "their just ants, probably at my level" -- wrong.

The combat system has somewhat of a learning curve but I guess I wouldn't expect to be killing foxes any time soon. Fortunately I found a post that does an awesome (although lengthy) job of explaining combat [bookmarked for future reference].

Do people generally play this game solo? It would seem that progress would be faster when playing with a group, but so far I have encountered no one, although I have been robbed of my cooked fish and roots while sleeping.

I found the map for W4 but can't really make out where on that map I would be. Is there some sort of add-in that allows me to map which tile I am on?

Also, it seems people generally use some modified client to play this game. Is there a generally accepted preference? Where can I find these clients? What's recommended?

Cheers

Of all your questions there's one thing that I can answer which is a generally accepted strategy is to move the slider in your personal preferences closer towards Peace.
Doing so will also raise your Change which both add to the bonus % of LP you gain which is great early on. I assume WAY late game you might move the slider back towards Tradition, but with full Change and Peace you gain an extra 360% LP, up to 380% with the buff you gain from drinking tea.

I hope this didn't patronize you if you already knew it.

Client: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10840

I've been playing for about 3 weeks now with a buddy of mine. The game is great fun. We are hermits. It's fun makign your own way trying to survive without any help. Couple tips I've found out along the way.

Put travel to hearth fire on your bar. Hit it right away if you see a bear. Especially with the stock client and probably boars too until you get the client above.

Go to the "face" and click on beliefs, and move toward peace every chance you can. Hover over the shield thing at the top to see the cooldown on it (gives you a lot more LP).

Store all your most important items on your person when you log off. Do this until you get some sort of defense. Claim, then wall. Each part protects you from more of the player base although nothing can protect you from everyone.

Start your first real house near a well, not a river (find one with hearth magic and make a rod). Bodies of water have too much traffic and will get you unwanted attention. There is something to be said for remote locations in the middle of nowhere.

once you get a town, create an alt and park him outside of town. Use this alt to get to know people who happen by your place at first. Many people will kill you on sight, many are friendly. Best to find out with an alt!

You can't. Log cabin always faces east, timber house and stone mansion always face south.

Can't figure this out for the life of me. Even though I have more than the needed area (5x5) for the cabin it tells me I can't build here. What gives?

Do ferns get in the way of construction?

Most likely, the area beneath the house is not paved. Pave it with cobblestones first.

He means get stoneworking, chip stones from the big boulders and use the stones to pave with, in a 5x5 fasion. Which is under adventure>landscaping, once you get stoneworking.

you need to plow the ground first, either by hand or with a plow (adventure > landscaping > plow, or build > tools> wooden plow)

and yes, playing in a group has advantages
Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.

Not all ground has to be paved (f.e. grassland and heath requires no pavement).

All houses and such require a paved area. Make sure you have the rows around the house paved as well, since you won't be able to pave them after starting the build.
Also, it might be possible a house refuses to be build if the door would be blocked, or if a player (including you) is standing on the area.

I use Gilbertus' client aswell, although it purely depends on what you're doing (as you'll discover later on).

On personal beliefs, I prefer peace and then change. Next on, if you're a hermit and on your own, life.
