Thickets

Postby cloakblade » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:24 am

So I was reading on the wiki about thickets and they seem like an entertaining terrain barrier and I was thinking about building a little fort in one. I'll be doing this encampment as a hermit although I do have a village I belong to.

So I have a couple of questions:
1. If you plow over an area of a thicket and replant grass does it become another type of terrain.
2. This question came up as I was taking a look at near by thickets. YOU CAN'T DIG IN A THICKET? Is there any way to test soil quality without this? I want a big thicket so its a pain to have to mess with me so I don't want to try and rely on what the soil quality is outside the thicket and I can't see any plants growing inside the thicket. I'm going to be farming so I was hoping to find a thicket with good soil quality that I can sit in and farm.

If it comes down to it I'll just scrap this idea and move on but I think it would be a really good plan to be left alone (I'll still be ready to fight, obviously) as a mostly clear cut thicket sounds like the worst place to try and raid ever.

Thanks for any and all help.

Don't believe you can plow thickets, sorry.

The wiki says that, when you plow it, it turns to fir forest.
This means you'd have to plow once before you can dig, and twice to place another type of land.

Hmm, that's incredibly strange. You'd have to plow it and then not grass it and let it decay to a tile naturally to make it back into a forest. You also can't dig plowed tiles, so you'd have to turn it into grass or let it decay into a forest tile to test soil quality.

Yeah I walked to a near by thicket and tried to dig (failed). Then plowed it and dug. That is interesting that you would have to let it decay to revert to a more suitable terrain. I might try do a mass plow (I'll need to bring lots of water) and see what happens. But as I stated about is there any way to test the soil beyond dig and finding a crop? Because if not I'll have to plow a small area in each nearby thicket to find out soil quality. But I guess if I really want it I'll have to do what needs done.

If I go threw with it I'll post different finds about it. I just believe that a thicket is the truest form of natural defense (mountains probably being second) and it would be fun to be able to do this at anytime to ward away criminals.

Correct, you'd have to plow on every single field you'd like to test :S

Thicket sure seems like a good defence, but remember that you also can't walk in it yourself.

Heh. Reading this thread I got the funniest idea of "Thicket Forts" or something. Seems like something to try out sometime. Wouldn't be able to make a ram or anything I believe, plus, no one goes into thickets to look for targets.

You didn't ^^

Yea, Thicket isn't really a place to look for targets... until this thread came along, lolz.
You can build a ram, you'd just have to plow the area first xD

Actually This is the whole idea behind what I'm doing. Except I'm just doing a small expansion. But I want to make sure that doing so does just force me to crawl (or drink A LOT of water). If I can terraform a section of it to walk around in and if I can find one with god soil quality then I'm going to build a fort. If I can't terraform a section will certainly not do this but if its only testing soil q that becomes a problem (which is doubtful if the first thing happens) then it won't be a big deal.

You can terraform it, you just have to plow it twice. (according to wiki)
