How do I find other people / where I am?

I am a noob.. I started the game and climbed up the ladder from the starting area.. and just fell into a bunch of wilderness! I've been wandering about and have found the occasional abandoned cottage, but no people. I've been following rivers looking for settlements but can't find any people. Is there any way I'm missing to navigate to others?

Also how do I fish? I found a bone hook (raided from someone's house), an earthworm (dug up), and equipped them both on my fishing pole and tried to use the fishing pole but it says it's still not equipped properly?

As to find people, you have to walk into them or use a HS to kin them.
For fishing rods, use a line (string) as well.
You have the best chance of finding string with foraging, spindly taproot can be used as string in this case
(stinging nettle doesnt work for fishing rods afaik).

You'd still need a fishing spot though (where fish jump out of the water), and they arent near shorelines as much, so get a boat

Haven't found any taproot.. but I found an abandoned cottage with a whole bunch of raw fox meat, and roasted it

What are the chances that I'll run into a real settlement if I just keep exploring? Or do I pretty much need someone else to invite me to the game to find anybody?

You can find people, and it's easier if you manage to locate yourself on the world map. Basically you will every now and then run into the occasional hermit or hunter, but unless you live in an active neighborhood, your best bets of finding people is by looking for villages.

You need to look for something very remarkable about your region and search for that on the map.

because the current server just can handle ~1k players atm. as soon server and connection is/was improved the playerbase constantly grows/grew
