Keep animals out of my home?

I can't build a brick wall, so how can I build something to keep animals out? I have a fence, but my claim doesn't keep npcs out of coming through the gaps. And placing urns in the gaps doesn't work.

You could close off the fence and destrory/rebuild when you when you want to get out.
