Sorry guys, just some noob questions.

I have read that people hate deforestation.
Basic houses take 200 blocks, and 100 boards.
That's a lot of trees.
PER PERSON.
How are we supposed to deal with that?

How am I supposed to get some basic materials?
String, mining hole, seeds to start a farm?
I know I'm supposed to trade with neighbours, but ours are either too poor, or don't speak English.
I traveled around for an hour or so, but could find no one online.

Is there a world map?
I found one for world two, but I have no idea what world we're in either, or where we are.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: One of the main things we want/need is a brick wall.
For this we need iron.
For that we need a mining hole.
For that we need rustroot extract, which we need 500 exploration*perception to find.
Mine is currently 1.
We have no seeds, no mine, no farm, no animals since we have nothing to feed them with, no walls.
I almost have enough for the area protection one.

So, can anyone help us get started?

I'm a noob too (started yesterday with 2 friends) but I'll answer as best I can..

Deforestation: Go ahead and do it. If people don't live very nearby it's your forest. Just make sure it's put to use instead of used to grind baskets or whatever.
String: Early on your best bet is Spindly taproot Only requires lvl 1 foraging. Lvl 4 will show the most of them. Just wander in the forest until you find them. If you need a lot of string early, find someone to trade with.
Mining Holes/metals: As far as I can tell this is not easy to get, and shouldn't be part of your short-term or even medium-term plan.
Start a farm: This is one where trade, even a little bit, comes in real handy.. or find an abandoned farm and steal seeds (esp flax and wheat!)
World map is here: http://algeralith.info/HavenMap2 Despite the name, this is world 4, the current one. Good luck finding yourself, that took a while for me.
Brick walls are a luxury. I've only ever seen them in Crossroads, which is not just claimed land, not just a village, but a confederation OF villages.

Thanks Tamalak.
Looking at that map I doubt I'm going to find myself :P
I didn't realize putting up values made you find more items that early, I just thought it increased the quality/speed, so that will help too.

200 Blocks and 100 Boards
12 Blocks per log, 2 logs per tree
17 Logs for blocks, 9 Trees
4 Boards per log, 2 logs per tree
25 Logs for blocks, 12 Trees

21 Trees isnt even a small patch of forest, it's barely enough of a clearing to place your house and have some farm land to the side.

Buy some exploration and you'll find string and WWWs for seeds.

I'm playing with a decent sized group of friends.
We all made our houses, the bigger wooden one you can make at the start, now it's a decent walk to get to a tree.

If that's the case, then the area you've settled is your own and no one has the right to throw a hissy fit about the lack of trees. People get upset over others grinding lp off of deforestation and not of people building settlements and homes. Keep of trucking and stay safe!

larger houses dont tend to be much use at the start of a game.

if u're wanting to make smaller items using wood,. collect it from further away where less ppl live and where there are trees. I do this with boats and barrells, because i can lift them and travel to eharth fire with them. or items i can store in my inventory.

everyone starts from scratch, you cant expect to be mining when u've onyl jsut started. U need to build lp, buy skills, improve them. foraging is one of the msot useful skills to have at the start to hunt small animals and find string. to build up string can take a while, but if tehres a few of you then your should find this pretty easy

it will take time before u can really be mining, it requires more exphsive skill set, plus finding one is a pain.

good luck and enjoy the game:)

Thanks Eemerald.
Well now I need lots of LP, and am going to be making houses just for the sake of it...
Is there anything wrong with this or is there a better way?

ummm...well u would be wasting space u couldotherwise use later
Houses arent as vital as it may seem now
i upped my foraging skills when i first started, built cupboards, and table and chairs, and various others things i could use like baskets and crates etc. Pottery is quite easy to get good lp from. Even digging for clay is good lp grinder, plus the puts and containers u make u can use to store things in.

building gates is a good way too, u jsut need branches for that.

forage your way around, build a boat further away where it's deserted with lots of trees, so u dont waste the resources next to you, you'll need them trust me.

if u build buckets do it in shallow water so they disppear. do this in areas further away with lots of trees again, so that ure not wasting your own resources.

Dreamcatchers- build a little farm ofthem. then harvest them and make the well finder thing...which i cant remember what it's called! but make those on shallow water and drop in the water so they dissapear

other than that, hunting once u start is a good way to build lp.

Houses are vital, as are cupboards. You will need to store A lot of goods if you have crop farmers, hunters, miners, silk farmers, pearl farmers, tree farmers, etc.. Make sure you have enough space so that it doesn't limit you when you need it. A decent silk farmer can easily take up 32+ cupboards just for the silk eggs alone, not to mention the silk products they produce.
