when committing a criminal act, do scents only appear on claims? Do they appear when fighting on boats? Or do they just appear whereever?

Whenever there's a crime on a claim, there's a scent (if I recall correctly).

it has to be on a claim, since its not a crime if there is no proper owning of the property, this however does not include murder as it can happen anywhere at any time, and stealing from people who are knocked out or dead is also a crime.

i was building my cabin yesterday and i was knocked out and robbed but im confused about this. can anyone help?
