The Mining Process

Postby Sodapressed » Tue Feb 22, 2011 5:07 am

I read over the wiki and am confused as to the process of mining.
I was able to mine 4 ore, which likely isn't...much at all.
Do I need a crucible? I have a smelter.
I'm aware I need charcoal, of which I made about 20.
Essentially, I'm concerned with getting a pic-axe, so I can create a cellar and then focus on more advanced things.
I read that each bar of metal requires 10 ore, is that true?
I'm so confused. :/

You don't need the crucible unless you want to make nuggets out of some metal bars.

It's not so much that each bar of metal needs 10 ore (you might be confusing that with nuggets), but instead there's only a chance that each ore will turn into a metal bar. A higher chance for full-industrial characters, a smaller chance for full-nature characters. So out of your four ore, you might get no metal, you might get one or two bars if you're really lucky.

Also keep in mind that for a pickaxe, you'll also need an anvil and a smithy's hammer first. Which takes up even more metal. And the cellar door itself takes a bar of metal. So yeah, it's more metal than you'd think at first. :/

Thanks for the info.
I noticed that whilst mining, with 100% stamina, sometimes I'll get ore, other times while more hungry, I get close but it says I'm too tired to mine....which is frustrating.
Any advice about that? Just..carry food with me?
Also, I was lucky enough to find a "wild" anvil, so Ill just need a hammer.

Actually I *think* the "too tired to mine" only pops up before the next bar starts counting down, so you don't actually lose progress or whatever.

Anyhow, yeah, take food and water with you, if you want to mine for a decent bit. And extra torches.

In my case I can mine 1 ore for essentially my entire stamina bar. I have 67 STR (that's with bonus', 24 regular).
What can I do to reduce stamina use? Get a pic? haha

Not really sure, honestly... except that some places might have more ore in them, so you might just be in a bad spot. I'm still pretty new to mining myself though!

Pretty much. That and carry lots of tea on you (not on your person, per se, but in a coffer or chest near you), so you don't have to use up a whole lot of food which can be feasted upon.

So, I'm able to mine an area, but it drains my stamina before I can complete harvesting one ore.
Is that just to tease me?
wtf.

Pickaxe reduces stamina usage, as you mine faster with it.

When I started mining, I brought a flask and a bucket of water, to be able to at least fill my inventory with ore. You can also build a cart inside the mine, then bring 3 chests/crates/whatever and a whole barrel of water. Be aware that you need a steady supply of food to be able to mine that much though. No need to bring it with you, just stop mining when you get too low (starving is ok) and go home feasting.

If you only get one ore per bar of stamina, you're probably mining in a spot where you can barely mine, it will get better as you raise your strength and pickaxe/stone axe quality.

How long will a torch last on average?
