Smelting Ore

8/9 of the ore I just smelted were stones.
I suppose this is common?
It was tough enough doing all that work for nothing, but perhaps I was just unlucky?
Unrewarding game is unrewarding.

Also once you get your strength up higher and start using a pick ax you will be able to get more ore quicker. At full industry you will get 20% metal 80% stone.

Make note that the ore that is mined is dependant on the beliefs of the one who mined it, not the smelter. At least so I have been told.

That is correct. Learned this the hard way before and from the sounds of a lot of people I traded with in w3, so did they. I'm quite sure Rage from Xanadu threatened more than one person with death should they be giving him nature-mined ore. New Rome also had a policy that made me think they were weary of newbies selling them full-nature mined ore.

Congratulations on 600 posts Techxknight.
Anyway, I have a problem with making a legitimate alt..for some reason. I guess I should just "buck up" and spend several hours on him so that I'll have a mining alt.
I've left my main character neutral between Industry and Nature, because it's obvious that both are important thus it made me indecisive.
Any tips or...suggestions?

I decided on Nature based alts because all they need to do is hang around the farm and plant trees and such. You're exploration skills that let you find things aren't really impacted by going full nature, but you get bonuses for going full industry when it comes to finding clay, feldspar, and such.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Heh... even with full industry be prepared to cry sometimes. I've had 4 loads of 100% stones now. :x

I guess that makes sense because my main will have much more CON to survive outside of my base.

What are you smelting? Gold? =O

Also, make an industry alt. If you're not intimately familiar with mining, your miner is probably going to get killed by cave-ins. If you're going to lose a character or two, might as well be an alt instead of your main character. Also, mining is just Strength and if you inherit from a dead character, you get all of their beliefs except for Tradition/Change on the new character, so if you lose a miner you don't need to wait to get it back up to snuff. Cave Clay, Gray Clay, and Feldspar really aren't worth that much. A full nature character successfully harvests them 1/2 of the time while a full industry character harvests 2 at a time. So you get 1/4th as much as a full nature character. I guess your bone bricked village will need more than just you working on it?
