Quick question about mining.

Postby at0mix » Sun Feb 27, 2011 10:01 am

I apologize if this has been answered, I haven't seen it, I've searched, and the H&H wiki is my homepage, so trust that I have checked.

Basically, here's my question: If I enter a cave, and have mining, and a stone axe equipped, I choose adventure>mine and click the wall, but nothing happens, not trying to find ore randomly or anything, just wanted to see how it'd work.
However, I have only tried just at cave entrances, do I have go to deeper?

I assumed I would simply get stone, and if I didn't have enough strength I'd get a message, but literally nothing happens.

What'd I do wrong, or what am I missing, and again, apologies if it's been answered.

You can't dig or successfully build mineshafts too close to a cave entrance. ~20-25 tiles away is when you can start to dig.

Thank you, I figured that'd be the problem, but I don't carry torches around and have only tried when I stumbled onto one.

If lighting is an issue, the fastest and easiest solution is a custom client such as Gilbertus, Ender, Arksu, or Pacho's. Otherwise, if you're planning to tough it out, dual wield torches while exploring. Light sources compound on one another, so two torches creates a larger area of light. If you Really want to go all out, lift a lightsource, wear a lit miners helmet, and dual wield torches for maximum light radius in caves.

The fastest and generally most convenient way is to just make campfires and use those to light a cave up. I'm not sure if you can build those near the entrance anymore though?

Yes you can, I built one recently within 5 squares of the entrance. Not sure if it makes a difference but I only seem to be able to build them on paved tiles, not hard to do in a cave surrounded by stone sources though.

They don't have to be on paved tiles, at least the yesterday they didn't.
