Should I bother with carpentry?

Postby Ignus » Mon Feb 28, 2011 8:48 pm

As the tittle says, should I?

'm still finding my feet in the game and am still experimenting with stuff. I was enjoying playing with carpentry but then noticed I couldn't really do much more with it. I have the skill, and 5 points in the skill value thing, but is it worth increasing? Carpentry doesn't seem to make anything that benefits hugely from high quality, unless I'm just reading it wrong, so are points better spent elsewhere?

Related question: Do people tend to specialize in one field, or pick up a bit of everything?

Thanks in advance peoples

Board quality is softcapped by carpentry and boards affect the quality of the things you build with it (loom, herbalist table, churn...) and is used to produce charcoal or directly used as fuel.
So if you haven't planted any trees above q10 yet, you only need to raise carpentry to a level where it won't lower your board quality when using q10 logs. For example, if you have a q100 saw, then floor(sqrt(100*10))=31 carpentry will be sufficient.

As for specializing: I suppose it depends on whether you're part of a village or playing as a hermit. As a hermit, you probably won't get around skilling everything a bit.

Carpentry is good later on in the game when you have access to better tools and materials so that your carpentry skill doesn't limit the Quality of whatever your trying to make.

If you're new I'd recommend Explorer ( I try at least for 35 since it stacks with PER), Marksman (so you can hunt) and survival (so you can make better tools and butcher better materials form animals).

Thanks for the help guys, I think I'll stick with it and just make an alt that can do the more practical things (i.e. stave off starvation).

30 carpentry is acceptable until you start growing your own trees, then you'll want to pump it up some more.

Shouldn't that mean that it wouldn't be a waste to put points in carpentry? Who wouldn't want sex appeal?
