i take it the only way to find your location is to find a lake, or other feature, then look at a huge map such as
http://algeralith.info/HavenMap2/
right?
or is there a program that will search a image(such as a screenshot) and compare it to the map?
or a mod that says your coordinates. because the game has to keep track of SOME kind of coordinate system.

after about 45 minutes of me going in a row boat up and down rivers and through lakes, i only saw one person, he said my coordinates are 2, 102, but when i went to look on a map those coordinates showed nothing similar. i take it they used a different map.

As far as I know the map at algeralith.info is the only one currently in use.

The way that worked for me was to take a picture of the minimap showing something unusual (beaches are good), remember what was around (e.g. mudflat, mountain, other unusual terrain) and wait until the next time the server crashed. Then it doesn't matter that you have to spend 20 minutes scanning the minimap (beaches show up at a surprisingly low zoom level) because you're not missing out on playing the game.

ETA: Or of course you could just be in a place that hasn't been mapped yet.

If he just started I suggest having him make a new character so he can spawn at your Hearthfire, using your Hearthsecret.
