Sling. Shoots faster, takes just one hand, can be used with backpack and ammo is not a concern. High quality bow can be nice when you have high marksmanship because you can one shot foxes, boars and deer, but I still don't think it's worth the inventory juggling hassle.

I prefer the bow, if you get to decent MM (~100) and alright PER (~50) , you should be able to 1-shot foxes and most deer. I still carry a very low quality sling with me for bears, since those guys have way too much HP to be 1-shot and run like babies at the sight of numbers above 80. I've even had bears run during their enraged state, it's ridiculous... As for boars, if you happen to 1-shot them, great! otherwise, you'll be chasing after them with a sling or bow either way, better to do more damage while you can with ranged.

The problem with the sling, in my opinion, is the fact that everything runs from you and you rarely 1-shot anything. So, you could spend time boarding things up (fox/deer) so they won't run or you can 1-shot them, the way I see it. Sometimes higher level deer will still avoid being 1-shotted, so you might want to fence them in as usual, but still I think it saves me a lot of hassle to use the bow.

Feel like I'm missing some points.. oh well, that should be the gist of it.

If you shoot them at the moment they twitch, they don't run.

Just a question, is your inventory big enough to gather enough stones to pelt anything ? For instance, how many stones would you use on a boar using a Q10 sling ?
edit : I was also wondering how much AGI do NPCs have.

I've never actually tried this.. just curious, does it have to be -exactly- when they're twitching or just roughly? Seems like it would be a hassle to time it exactly every time when you're still new to the game and everything hits for low damage. But, that's a good point and I totally forgot about that, again :P .

Even if you run out of stones, just go across the river to a nearby stone (don't go too far! if you break combat, you lose total LP gained when you finally kill it). If there are no stones nearby, lure the animal by the river first till you see a stone across the river. Sometimes boulders are close enough to the river that you can chip the stones off from within your boat, that's the best case scenario for running out of stones.

As for how many.. hmm.. well boars typically have around ~250 HP, if you're hitting for 10~50 damage, that's like 10 stones average? It's definitely not super fast or anything, but it should be possible.

I have no idea exactly the AGI of animals, I'd guess no more than 50 on most of them, though. -Maybe- bears have more, but I doubt it.
