You need hare's-foot to get better luck, but for that you need rabbit which you need to spot with some luck and for the luck you need the hare's-foot .......

I've been wondering what it's like to start without any more advanced players to help (or any abandoned settlements to steal from)

It seems like you can't do hardly anything until you find that first bone.. what other roadblocks are there..

Are you hunting at day or night in game? I'm unsure if it applies to rabbits, but most animals seem to spawn in more abundance during the day.

If you're trying to get bones, you could opt for chickens instead. They travel in groups, and have pretty predictable spawns, so amassing bones that way might be better. If, however, you're looking for leather, you'll need to go for rabbits.

Roadblocks are; First bone (if you're unlucky). First seed (if you don't get a lot of exp. early on). First metal (Lack of cave, or high expl for rustroot). Only ones I can think of really, everything else comes with time.
