Breeding and quality

How does breeding work in terms of Q? Does the breeding quality determine everything? Also, how does meat and hide Q work? I butcher a Q42 meat calf and only get Q26 meat?

Breeding quality determines most of the factors of the offsprings produce, I believe.

Meat, hide, intestines, etc, all still are softcapped by survival. You likely didn't have a high enough QL tool, or survival skill.

Mother and Father breeding quality + Random Variable = Calf Qualities

Infant animals give ~half quality materials. Makes getting high quality calf intestines fun~!

My survival is 200 and my stone axe is Q50. The meat received not being the correct Q also happens when I butcher adults.

That means you're not feeding your animals high enough quality fodder and its lowering their qualities.

No

A stat of the calf = (Mother+father stat)/2 + random (-5,+20), softcapped by the breeding quality of the father.

Chickens work more like silk moths do. A qX egg hatches into a qX chick. The chicks quality can only be lowered by the quality of the fodder, never raised. Adult chickens are fixed quality once they reach maturity. They don't have a 'lifetime' quality meter. Eggs do still have the -5,+5 random range no matter the fodder in the coop. Thus, yes, higher quality fodder is needed to raise the quality of the flock. (A q15 chick will be q10 before maturity if fed q10 or less fodder.)
