How do I fish?

I apologize for the newbiew question, but I am stuck trying to fish. I have the fishing skill and I have crafted a fishing pole. When I try to fish it tells me I need a fully equiped fishing pole. I have the fishing pole equiped and I have some worms, but I am guessing I need to put the worm on the hook somehow. I can't figure it out. Could someone give me some pointers?

At the first find some strings(spindly taproots, for this case) and left-click them, then right-click the pole. Do the same with the hook and the bait(worms).
Ah, and you can successfully fish only at those places where fish jumps out of the water.

The only way you can make a hook straight off is with a bone, and you need to kill or find an already dead animal to do that.
Also, you might find it easier to use a woodfish as bait, as you don't need to go digging for them and only require 1 wood block.
It's also important to note that you will have trouble finding fishing spots without going into deeper water, which will require a boat.

Fair warning, your chances of catching a fish are around 1 in a 100. Even when thousands are jumping out of the water. You have better chances of catching them with your boat mid-jump than with a fishing pole.

Also, nodes are random. They may be in shallow, they may be in deep. The main concern is where the center of the node is, which can also be in the shallow or the deep.

Aww don't ruin it, he thought I was serious. Actually the current issue is that even though you have depleted all the fish, you still see them jumping out of the water. So I'm guessing they must be the spirits of fish long ago. That or fish that taste so bad that even a starving person wouldn't eat it.

That means the fishing spot is too deep in the water. You'll need to find shallows that are close to it or just get a boat and fish with that. You'll still need a fully setup fishing rod and everything.
