How bad is being on an island?

me and my more experienced friend recently settled down on a fairly large island with high (50-60) soil q in certain areas. he liked the soil q, but was very distraught by the idea of putting down roots on an island base. i, for one, don't see what the big deal is. could someone enlighten me? it seems like we have enough trees for forever, and the "mainland" is only a quick boat hop away. the island is sizable and (for the time being) we have it all to ourselves, it's got at any one time about 4 anthills, 2 rabbits, and occasionally a herd of cows! thanks in advance.

You are screwed if it gets deforested, your boat gets stolen and your hearth fire is on the island. So is there any remote chance it could be deforested by a determined team of griefers/aggressive neighbours looking for wood shaving curiosities? Hiding can also be difficult.

Claim the entire island. Build a palisade around the edges as soon as you can. You'll be fine. Get enough con to swim the river if you're really scared. Islands are great places to live and lots of fun.

Unless you can swim off of the island with 10 con, I wouldn't suggest it; if you die and are left stranded, you will be fucked unless someone can come and help you. And until you have walls up, you'll be veeeeeeery popular. Also, your soil q will get raped.
