The math behind the hydrological survey

Postby nicklepontius » Tue Mar 15, 2011 6:34 am

I discovered a q11 water.

After reading
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Finding_h ... ,_and_soil
http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Dowsing_rod
I assume I can apply math to make up for guesswork to include the survey of water under land.

My assumptions are that the tiles from the node degenerate in quality linearly in concentric circle.

I am luck to have a river in a circle surrounding 90%+ of the land area I am surveying. I have gone up and down the river and made dots on a map in MS paint assigning quality numbers per color.

I presume I can take two points and make triangles, preferably equilateral, to come up with a third point. I will, however, have to think about my variables and formula to decide what the third point is. The triangles will still be useful to indicate pattern.

There is an assumption that there will be multiple well points on the land as well, so the triangles will help me conserve well-building resources.

I think some of my assumptions and presumptions are incorrect.

What id like to know is how you get the map? so you can make marks on it. heard talk of map generators, but never actually found where i can download one

The custom clients all have them built into them. Just go into the client folder and open the 'Map' folder. It has the maps of what you've discovered in-game.

If you're willing to be systematic about it, then yes, you'll be able to pinpoint the node this way. Your assumption about concentric circles is correct, and the nodes do ignore land as an obstacle. Personally? The trouble's only worth it if you think there's at least q30+ water there.

However, well points are exactly a dime a dozen. You probably won't have one right on the node center, but if the node is inland from the rivers the quality should go up nicely.

Does quality of the well affect water quality, I did some quick maths on a well I built in w4 and the water quality was the average of my materials with the stone 1/15th weighted, that is even though it requires 30 stones they're only counted twice. so (2*stone q+2*block q+board q+bucket q+rope q)/7
