How far in is ore?

I'm in a catch 22 at the moment. I need ore to make a support so I don't get crushed, but I need to dig deep into the wall to get ore. So far it's just been stone, stone, stone. Any thoughts?

Ore veins can be anywhere. Dig along the walls until you get some ore.
If you get stone from a wall section, continue moving.
