Mining help

Hello ive just been able to start mining, and i was just wondering how to go about locating a vein within a mine. do i just take one square out of every wall i can, or do i have to mine 4 or 5 squares into the black area?????

Also can veins be found far into the black area beyond the wall edges..... eg. 10-20 squares in?????

Veins of ore are spawned randomly on the underground layers. You might find one next to you or you might not find one for a thousand tiles in any direction. Good luck. Just dig safely until you get ore.

So am i best to find a wall i can mine then mine in a straight line until i hit something??
or should i try lots of different walls over a short distance?

You'll die to cave ins. I advise mining every other wall segment that you can first to see if you have local ore nearby. If that fails, please refer to the zigzag digging method which does not cause cave-ins. I'm too lazy to link it but I'm sure you can find it with a quick search.
