Sound Delay x64

I just had to reformat my hard drive and when I re-installed Java, I used the x64 installer (previously I had used the 32 bit by mistake and never corrected it). Now, whenever a sound should come on, there's about a half second delay. Is this a common problem / any ideas for a fix?
