Houses on non-paved grassland ?

Postby Orteil » Sat Mar 26, 2011 1:28 am

So I'm building a timber house in a grassland. Halfway through I realize I didn't pave...
Will my house decay faster ? Do houses still decay at all ? Am I going to end up as a weird homeless man who bugs people for change and dandelions ?

It will decay faster and continue to decay even if it's within a claim (Village or Personal)
Your behavior and activities are up to you. I propose selling dried hemp buds and cheap wine to villages in exchange for useless coins and a shiv.

As long as it's claimed it will not decay. Exceptions are made for objects not meant to be stored outside (looms/cupboards) but they are very few.

Untrue.

I've had crates, drying racks, coffers, even palisades decay on claimed ground in w4.

Claim merely reduces the amount of decay by a large amount.

Hmm. Would be nice to get a dev confirmation on this. I was under the impression that claim would stop decay totally.

Oh damn. Thanks for the clear answer.
Oh well, I'll repair it as needed, I don't feel like making all those trees go to waste.
(is that a wise decision or am I being a careless turd ?)

But he also explicitly states that they "will not decay" if they're on paved tile. That seems to discredit the "claim only slows down decay" theory.

Still curious what the intended behavior is.

You're not selling drugs and alcohol to young hearthlings for spare change, so clearly something is wrong with you.
Your method will be fine, just keep it on a claim and it shouldn't decay too fast.

Why do we need him to explicitly state it? We see evidence of it constantly on most buildings and objects. Even if your house and wall aren't decay enough to see, you can still likely repair them in they've been around since the start of the world.

Because it's nice to know how exactly claims affecting decay is implemented . I guess it's not really that big of a deal, just interesting to me.
